Talisker 1981 20 Year Old Cask Strength
This Talisker 1981 20-Year-Old Cask Strength single malt is widely regarded as the best ever Talisker release. Distilled at the Isle of Skye’s oldest distillery in 1981, this whisky was matured in sherry casks and bottled in 2002. Filled at a natural cask strength of 62%, only 9,000 bottles were produced. This excellent islands single malt has become increasingly desirable amongst collectors, helped by incredible reviews including 93 points at Whisky Fun. Jim Murray’s review of this Talisker 1981 gave it a score of 95 points, commenting ‘Miss this and your life will be incomplete’.
Situated on the shores of Loch Harport on the Isle of Skye, Talisker was founded in 1830 by brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill. The Talisker distillery was purchased by a consortium of blenders including DCL (later the future owners Diageo) in 1916, giving an indication of the quality and demand for Talisker’s spirit. In 1960, a still house fire tragically destroyed the distillery leaving Talisker silent until 1962 while it was being rebuilt. Replicas of the five original stills were constructed to maintain the preservation of the original Talisker style and flavour. Talisker gained prominence as a single malt when a 10-Year-Old expression became a founding member of the Classic Malts of Scotland Selection in 1988. Talisker is now one of Diageo’s most successful and important single malt brands.
