Coleburn Distillery
Coleburn distillery began distillery in the last year of the 19th century, at the end of the 1890s whisky boom. The distillery was designed by Charles Doig, the inventor of the so-called ‘pagoda kiln’ that has become synonymous with Scotch whisky, and one of Scotland’s most revered architects.
After a few ownership changes and mergers, DCL licensed Coleburn distillery to J&G stewart, and subsidiary based in Edinbugh.
Coleburn was a victim of the 1980s Whisky Loch, and eventually lost its distilling license in 1992. Since 2004, plans have been in place to turn the former distillery site into a luxury hotel and spa. However, in 2014 the dunnage warehouses at Coleburn were leased to Murray McDavid. Murray McDavid owns the Coleburn brand and has expressed interest in restarting production at the distillery. Watch this space…
Douglas Laing
Douglas Laing is one of very few whisky companies in Scotland that is still family-run; it was founded by Fred Douglas Laing in 1948 and is now under the leadership of Fred Laing and his daughter Cara. It is under this leadership that the company has moved towards bottling single malts in the UK rather than exporting elsewhere. Today, Douglas Laing has bottled whiskies from the likes of Brora, Ardbeg, and Port Ellen.
