The Port Ellen distillery was closed in 1983, however, Diageo who owns the distillery has continued to produce specially selected annual releases from the mothballed distillery. The annual releases are highly prized by collectors, investors, and drinkers.
This bottle was one of the 2nd release, a stunning 24 year old, distilled at Port Ellen in 1978.
These regular releases have helped maintain the popularity of Port Ellen and has resulted in a dramatic rise in the bottles' value. In addition, 2017 saw Diageo announce plans to reopen the Port Ellen distillery in 2021, and as marketing for the reopening continues you can expect that to have a positive impact on the value of bottles from the distillery.
Condition
In good condition. The bottle has a decent fill level and label.
Port Ellen Distillery
Diageo announced the reopening of Port Ellen way back in 2017 and fans of the distillery have been waiting excitedly since then. Finally rescheduled for re-opening in 2023, Port Ellen has garnered a cult following that is delighted by the news, and by the knock-on impact to the value of vintage bottles on the secondary market.
When Port Ellen closed in 1983 its original stills were lost, which is always going to be the biggest point of contention for Port Ellen drinkers and analysts in the future, how close could the distillate really be? Rumoured to only produce 500,000 litres per year for the first decade of production, Port Ellen will be something to really focus on as people prepare to compare old and new in the next few years.
