Millburn Distillery
Millburn distillery was granted a distilling licence somewhere between 1805 and 1807, but whisky was not produced there until 1825. After a few years, though, the distillery became a flour mill once again as the new owners were not used to the commerce laws brought about by the 1823 Excise Act.
On the 1870s, David Rose, the owner of Millburn, started up whisky production once again and he distillery eventually passed to his son before being sold to Alexander and David Haig in the early 1890s. The distillery was sold again to Booth’s in 1921, which then became part of DCL.
Sadly, Millburn’s tiny buildings and low capacity made it an inevitable victim of the 1980s Whisky Loch, and the distillery was demolished in the 1990s to make way for a restaurant and budget hotel.
Douglas Laing:
Douglas Laing is one of very few whisky companies in Scotland that is still family-run; it was founded by Fred Douglas Laing in 1948 and is now under the leadership of Fred Laing and his daughter Cara. It is under this leadership that the company has moved towards bottling single malts in the UK rather than exporting elsewhere. Today, Douglas Laing has bottled whiskies from the likes of Brora, Ardbeg, and Port Ellen.
