Glenesk 1979 SMWS 86.1 Bottled 1990
This bottle is from the first cask of Glenesk bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Any lover of SMWS knows that finding .1 bottlings is very difficult. Glenesk 86.1 was distilled in 1979 and bottled in 1990.
Glenesk distillery has had the most name changes of any Scottish distillery. Its monikers include Highland Esk, North Esk, Montrose, Hillside, and Glenesk. Despite producing some much lauded whisky, this now long closed distillery from the eastern highlands area did not survive the culls of the 80’s. As well as many great independent bottlings Glenesk has one famous bottle as part of the Diageo Rare Malts series, a bottle which was incredible, but not enough to bring wavering attention and demand back to this distant place. The distillery building was finally demolished in 1996.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) was formed in 1983 as an exclusive members club. These days they release whisky from over 125 different distilleries worldwide. Renowned for their single cask, cask strength bottlings, many early SMWS bottles are highly sought after.
SMWS bottlings have a unique coded system to denote the distillery and edition. Many of the early decimal numbers are therefore the most sought after of the editions and their Japanese whisky bottlings are becoming particularly desirable.
